The Lyons of Warrington

 

Thomas Lyon (1626-94) was youngest son of George Lyon of Balmuchtie, Angus. He married Dorothy and they left Scotland and settled at Warrington and purchased property. They had a son -

John Lyon (1688-) who purchased estates in Appleton. He married Margaret, daughter and heiress of Thomas Edwardson of Peel House, Lancs. They had three children -

(1) Thomas Lyon (-1776) the elder son & heir, he died unmarried and was survived by his brother Matthew.

(2) Matthew Lyon (1716-82) married Ellen daughter and heiress of James Fairclough of Wigan. They had three children -

 Thomas Lyon (1756-1818), unmarried, JP & Lt Col, he left his estates to his nephew Thomas (1786-1859).

 James Lyon (-) Rector of Prestwich, Lancs, married Mary daughter of Edmund Radcliffe.
They had a first son James Radcliffe Lyon (1785-), who was the Rector of Pulford, Cheshire and in 1814 he married Frances daughter of George Clayton of Lostock.
They had a second son Thomas Lyon who survived his uncle.

 Ellen (-) married Joseph Parr of Fir Grove, West Derby, Lancs.

(3) Ellen (-) married Edward Pemberton, of Warrington and had issue.

Thomas Lyon (1786-1859) DL, JP, in 1820 he married Eliza (-1865) youngest daughter of George Clayton of Lostock Hall, Lancashire. Soon after his marriage he built a mansion Appleton Hall. Thomas was a great benefactor of the church and largely funded the new church at Stretton. Thomas died in 1859. Thomas & Eliza had children -

(1) Thomas Lyon (1823-85) married 1863 Helena daughter of Baron Posse of Alsponga, Sweden. THe Cheshire Observer reported his death and family connections in 1885.

(2) Thomas Henry Lyon (1825-1924) DL, JP, High Sheriff 1867, Lieut RN, Capt of Militia; in 1860 he married Vanda (-1861), 3rd daughter of John Wilson-Patten. He married 2ndly, in 1872 to Edith Grace (-1929) only daughter of William Hill Branker, of Bispham Hall, Lancs, they had a daughter Dorothy Lyon (1876-1923).

(4) Francis Lyon (1834-1924) Col RHA, married in 1863 to Flora youngest daughter of Hon Arthur Anneslsey and sister of 11th Viscount Valentia and died 26 February 1885, leaving issue -

 Charles Lyon (1865-1944) DL, JP, High Sheriff, Lt Col RFA. He survived his uncle.

 Francis Lyon (1867-1953) CB, CMG, CVO, DSO, Hon Brig Gen, Col RFA, Military Attaché, Brussels, Belgian Croix de Guerre, in 1910 he married Winifred Jane elder daughter of Joseph Cooksey Borwick of 27 Prince’s Gate, SW. Children - Paul Lyon (1912-26); Ivan Lyon (1915-44); Frank Lyon (1921-).

 Arthur Lyon (1869-1920) Major South African Constabulary, Capt Border Regt, in 1913 he married to Gladys Anita, younger daughter of Capt Charles Stuart of Durban, South Africa.

 Henry Lyon (1872-) Asst Dist Commissioner Niger Coast Protectorate, served in South African Infantry and in Great War, in 1917 he married Laura, daughter of Victor A Lagerwall, of Port Elizabeth SA.

(5) Georgiana Lyon (-1907), one of three daughters, in 1852 married Richard Cross, a future partner of Parr's Bank and Home Secretary.

(6) Eliza Mary Lyon (-1878) was the daughter of Thomas Lyon. In 1856 she married Rev Richard Greenall of Stretton, son of Edward Greenall of the brewing family and owners of the Walton Estate from 1812.

Charles Lyon (1865-1944) DL, JP, High Sheriff, Lt Col late RFA, in 1894 he married Rachel Mary Fearne (-1926) only child of Sir Arthur Havelock, Governor of Ceylon. Children - Francis Charles Lyon (1895-1918); Margaret Grace Lyon (1899 -). In 1927 he married 2ndly, Gladys Anita (-1954) widow of his brother Arthur Lyon.
